Homer's οἶνοψ describes water seventeen times and, twice, a yoked pair of plough oxen. In the Iliad sweat runs around their horns; in the Odyssey the ploughman waits for sunset. Any account of the wine-dark sea has to survive the ox.

The word appears nineteen times in the Homeric text, in three forms. The accusative and dative singular go to the sea every time. The dual, which in Greek names a pair, occurs exactly twice, and both times it means oxen. Choose a mark below.

In the sceneOdysseus, on his last evening among the Phaeacians, watches for sunset like a hungry ploughman. The line ends with the same two words as Iliad XIII.
Formοἴνοπε
Both ox lines end with the same two words: πηκτὸν ἄροτρον, the jointed plough. The scenes differ. In the Iliad the oxen strain to the end of the furrow, sweat gathering at the roots of their horns. Only the Odyssey line belongs to a ploughman waiting for sunset and supper.
What the ending actually says
In Odyssey I, Athena crosses the sea with iron in her hold. οἴνοπα comes from οἶνοψ, “wine-looking.” On the next line αἴθωνα is the accusative of αἴθων, “blazing” or “gleaming.” Their morphology differs. Their proximity still matters: water and iron enter the verse through a vivid, changeable appearance.

The -ops ending in οἶνοψ joins wine to face, look or appearance. αἴθων belongs to another family. Separately, early epic calls wine αἴθοψ twenty-four times: a genuine -ops compound meaning fiery-looking or sparkling.
Where the formula lives
In early epic, οἶνοψ never accompanies θάλασσα, the sea in general, or ἅλς, salt water by the shore. It accompanies πόντος alone: the open water one crosses. Ships, departures, distant views, storms and wrecks gather around it. The word has a precise habitat: the sea as route and risk.
Allen's Oxford text has 19 Homeric occurrences. The Homeric Hymns and Hesiod add four, all of them with πόντος. That makes 23 in this textual tradition, and 24 in editions that read οἴνοπα at Iliad I.350, where Allen has ἀπείρονα.
οἴνοπα πόντον is also an inherited formula, a unit of oral composition with a history of its own. Its two uses, sea and oxen, establish the word's range in the tradition. Each performance could draw on a different part of that range.

One colour, two surfaces
Below are the sea and a working ox in low light. The ox panel borrows its evening from the Odyssey; the Iliad supplies strain and sweat around the horns. The sheen across the animal's back is a plausible visual reconstruction. Both surfaces take the same colour. Look for a value at which both stay believable.
VerdictBoth wobble. The sea reaches this at sunset, the ox only under a particular light.
Keep the depth and the sheen, set the hue aside.
In its opening state, both surfaces carry the same violet value from the middle of the range.
This visual demonstration makes the corpus constraint tangible. It makes no claim to measurement. The tradition could give the same adjective to open water and a working animal; a good account has to leave room for both uses.
What else the sea is called
The table covers the formulaic epithets that recur in the text, plus the three that occur once and bear on the colour question. It is not a complete inventory of the sea’s adjectives. The commonest describe extent and danger; the ones that look like colours turn out, on reading, to be measures of light or of movement.
One traditional interpretation of ἀτρύγετος is “unharvested” or “barren.” On that reading, the sea becomes the field nobody can reap, while the οἴνοπε oxen drag their plough through νειός, the fallow left unworked for a year. The image extends to either side of the shore.
How Greek colour words work
Four words, traced through the whole text. Each covers a region of experience that English cuts up differently. One of them gets its definition inside the poem: Thetis's veil is κυάνεος, and the next line says no garment was blacker.

In Homeric usage, γλαυκός tends towards glare, paleness and grey-green luminosity, while κυάνεος occupies a darker region extending towards black. Neither maps cleanly onto a modern colour swatch. English makes its own distinctions with turquoise, navy, teal and azure.
Classical Chinese offers a close parallel. 青, qīng, could name the green of grass, the blue of sky, and the darkness of hair or clothing. The modern categories green, blue and black once ran through the same word. This is evidence about the vocabulary that organised experience. οἶνοψ still has to be solved from its own uses.
What was actually in the cup
Greeks mixed wine with water in a krater. Red wine's anthocyanins exist as several forms in equilibrium, and pH, concentration, copigmentation, tannins and age alter the colour we see. This scheme describes that chemistry. The dilution and colour of a Homeric cup remain unknown.
The wines of Kos and Rhodes were made with seawater. Cato gives the recipe: water taken far from shore, in a calm, seventy days before the vintage. The salt kept the wine sound through winter. For centuries, the sea was an ingredient of wine.
The chemistry explains why wine colour is mobile and why violet or blue forms can occur under particular conditions. It does not describe a simple path caused by adding water. The pair of oxen still calls for a wider account.
Why water is blue
Pure water has an intrinsic blue colour: vibrations in the bond between oxygen and hydrogen absorb light at the red end of the spectrum. In a real sea, the eye also receives skylight reflected at the surface and light returned from below by particles that scatter it. Viewing angle changes the share contributed by each.
The blue of the sea is measurable, and Homer’s eyes had every condition needed to detect it. Linguistic categories can still shift what people distinguish most quickly: Russian speakers are faster across the siniy–goluboy boundary, and the advantage disappears under verbal interference. The poems preserve Homeric categories; the poet’s private visual experience remains inaccessible.
Four explanations, one test
Every explanation proposed in the last hundred and fifty years runs into the same stone. The right-hand column records what happens to it when it reaches the two oxen.

What weakens itThe proposal requires a formula that appears nowhere in the surviving texts. Its author says so first.
How a word became a theory about eyes
The English phrase “wine-dark” was born in the nineteenth century. The dark reading is older: it already appears in Hesychius's lexicon. Once established in English, it began a story that passed through physiology, anthropology and linguistics before returning to philology.
Hesychius
The lexicographer explains forms related to οἶνοψ with πορφύρεον and μέλαν, purple and black or dark. The gloss may miss the Homeric sense; it shows that a dark reading was already circulating in late antiquity.
Liddell & Scott
The great Greek-English lexicon glosses οἶνοψ as “wine-dark” beside “wine-coloured.” The rendering does not describe the sea; it describes an assumption about wine.
W. E. Gladstone
In his three volumes on Homer, the future British prime minister gives thirty pages to colour vocabulary. Black appears nearly two hundred times, white about a hundred, red fewer than fifteen, green and yellow fewer than ten. His conclusion: the Greek eye was “but partially developed.”
Lazarus Geiger
The German philologist extends the survey to the Vedic hymns, the Avesta, the Hebrew Bible and the Icelandic sagas. In none of them is the sky called blue. The order in which colour names appear looks the same everywhere.
Nature
The question becomes a headline in Nature. The decade’s leading hypothesis is that the colour sense evolved inside recorded history, between Homer and us.
W. H. R. Rivers
In the Torres Strait, Rivers measures the colour vision of the Murray Islanders with Holmgren wools and a tintometer. Their colour vision is normal. A separate word for blue is missing. From here on, the question stops being about eyes.
Berlin & Kay
Comparing languages worldwide, the two propose a sequence for basic terms: dark and light, then red, yellow and green, with blue at a later stage. The model changed the question, but ancient languages complicate it: their terms are often tied to materials and objects, and they partition the spectrum in several ways.
Winawer et al.
Russian has two basic words for blue, siniy and goluboy. Russian speakers tell apart two shades faster when the shades fall on either side of that boundary. The effect vanishes when a verbal task occupies their language.
Gibson et al.
From Tsimane speakers in the Amazon to students in Boston, warm colours are named more precisely than cool ones in every language measured. The authors connect the asymmetry to communicative need: objects tend to be warm and backgrounds cool. The sea offers a suggestive analogy for a large visual field that functions as setting.
How the sea looks in Romanian
George Murnu and Dan Slușanschi chose different paths through the same line. Murnu writes „Călătorind pe-ntunecata mare”, travelling on the darkened sea; Slușanschi writes „Marea ca vinul prin larg străbătând”, crossing the open sea like wine. Later, in the ploughman simile, Murnu calls the oxen „murgani”. Murg names the coat of an ox or horse, somewhere between dark chestnut and ash, and the hour before night.

The same word climbs to the sea as well, for a different Greek epithet. The Greek structure rebuilds itself in Romanian on its own.
The Romanian word for the blue-violet of water is vânăt, and it looks like a relative of vin, wine. It comes from Latin venetus, “of the colour of the Veneti,” the people at the head of the Adriatic who gave Venice its name and one of the racing factions its colour. Murnu distributes the word's effects between sea and ox; Slușanschi puts the wine back into the water.

What remains
Wine sits inside the word's formation; the original route of the comparison is lost. It may have begun with dark reddish brown, sheen, surface movement, or an older formula. The corpus preserves the limit: οἶνοψ must fit the open sea and two oxen under the yoke. “Wine-dark” chose one shade and made it famous. The Greek still holds the whole look.
The name of a thing says less about the thing than about what we needed to tell it apart from.
